SPX Graphics delivers touchscreen solution for TV2 election night

TV2 Denmark is known for their advanced broadcast graphics workflows and having major influence on the OGraf specification with EBU, a new specification for HTML graphics. SPX Graphics was invited to work with TV2 for the 2025 Danish local and regional elections to deliver a comprehensive touchscreen solution.

For this, SPX Graphics delivered a fully web-based touchscreen application with real-time election data, live video integrations, telestration, and more. The application is seamlessly linked to the SPX Broadcast Graphic Controller, which handles templated graphics to work in tandem with the touchscreen. We also created fullscreen, HTML-based filter graphics for visualizing interesting insights from the live election data on the night.

"At TV 2, we are committed to finding effective ways to enhance the clarity and depth of our election coverage. The introduction of SPX’s HTML-based touchscreen solution has provided us with a valuable tool for presenting election data in a more interactive and accessible manner. The quality and performance of the touchscreen have largely met our requirements, and SPX’s expertise in broadcast graphics has been evident throughout this project.” – Niels Borg, Competency Leader at TV 2

The project was delivered in two phases; one for pre-election and the other for election night. By taking advantage of the flexibility and speed of modern web development practices, we were able to create an on-air ready version of the touchscreen app which was used weeks in advance to help give historical context on pre-election shows.

"We have a long tradition of using the latest technology for our data driven election graphics” The system developed by SPX was available to us at a very early stage which allowed us to use that in the shows leading up to election night. This meant that our presenters were very comfortable with the system on the big night itself." - Mike Knight, Graphic Producer at TV2

The growing adoption of HTML in broadcast

The adoption of HTML graphics in the broadcast industry has increased drastically in the past year.

"After the IBC 2025 tradeshow we have seen a growing interest in HTML graphics for broadcast, not just in Europe but globally. The benefits of using web technologies for broadcast graphics are many, and we are happy to see that more broadcasters are starting to explore this." - Tuomo Kulomaa, Founder and CEO at SPX Graphics

One example being the official release of OGraf, the specification for HTML graphics created by the EBU (European Broadcasting Union). SPX Graphics and TV2 Denmark have been a part of the initiative from the very beginning, with the vision of ensuring the open capabilities of HTML graphics and its continued adoption.

"The OGraf specification empowers broadcasters to adopt a truly modular approach to HTML-based graphics, enabling users to seamlessly integrate the tools that best fit their workflow. By providing this flexibility, OGraf ensures that creative teams can leverage their preferred solutions while maintaining consistent, high-quality broadcast graphics." - Niels Borg, who is also a leader of the OGraf program.

This project serves as further proof and a vote-of-confidence to the maturity of HTML-based graphics for broadcast and is a great example of what can be achieved with this modern approach.

SPX Graphics wants to thank TV2 Denmark for the opportunity to work on this exciting project and looks forward to more collaborations in the future. Special thanks to Mike Knight from TV2 and the entire Team SPX behind this successful project: Theo Grimond (the lead developer in the project), Naoyuki Matsumoto, Abdel Ibrahim and Tomi Vilpponen.
